Basal metabolic rate and daily calorie calculator
Find out how many calories your body burns at complete rest and on a normal day based on your activity. Move the controls; the result updates instantly.
Your estimated daily expenditure is your balance point: eating around that number tends to maintain your weight. How much to adjust to lose fat or build muscle depends on your case, and that's what we define with you in the assessment.
I want to know what to do with my numberWhat is basal metabolic rate?
It's the energy your body uses at rest to stay alive: breathing, pumping blood, regulating temperature and repairing tissue. For most people it's the largest share of daily calorie expenditure.
How is it calculated?
We use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990), which in a review by the US Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (Frankenfield et al., 2005) most often came closest to measured expenditure in adults.
Men: 10 × weight + 6.25 × height − 5 × age + 5
Women: 10 × weight + 6.25 × height − 5 × age − 161
Daily expenditure is your basal metabolic rate multiplied by an activity factor, from 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (very high).
How accurate is it?
It's an estimate. It may vary for very muscular people, older adults or people with medical conditions, and it doesn't apply during pregnancy. Use it as a starting point and adjust based on your real progress.
If you have a medical condition, consult a health professional.
